Description
The White Hart Hotel, dating to circa 1900, incorporates earlier fabric. It is a three-storey and attic hotel arranged in an L-shape, with six-bay elevations facing Castlehill and Argyll Street. An additional chamfered corner entrance bay features a ground-floor entrance door and a three-storey semi-octagonal oriel above. The exterior walls are roughcast, with dressings of droved ashlar, all painted. A base course and eaves course are present, with raised margins around window and door openings.
The corner tower features an entrance door with a moulded surround. Above it, a semi-octagonal oriel window projects, supporting three-light bay windows at the first and second floors, and bipartite windows at each face of the third floor. Cill and lintel courses run at each floor, topped with a cornice at the eaves.
The northwest (Castlehill) elevation has seven bays, including the chamfered corner bay on the far left. Elsewhere, the fenestration is regular, with a doorway situated in the fourth bay.
The northeast (Argyll Street) elevation also has seven bays, grouped 3-4 and including a chamfered corner bay on the far right. The first bay features a two-storey, three-light canted oriel window at both the first and second floors, topped by a canted and pedimented dormer. A corniced bar frontage runs across the second and third bays, incorporating a door to the left and a tripartite window to the right. The fourth bay is parapetted at the eaves, and the first-floor window of the fifth bay is offset to the right. A seven-flue wallhead stack is located in the sixth bay, with a single window at ground floor level. A semi-octagonal dormer intersects with the left side, and a corbelled section at the third floor mirrors the corner tower to the right.
The rear elevations are regularly fenestrated and include a circular stair tower adjoining the southeast elevation. An adjoining L-shaped range of partly roofless, gabled buildings is constructed of harled random rubble.
The windows are timber sash and case, with four panes to most openings. The tower has two-pane lower sashes and eight-pane at the first and second floors, and four-pane upper sashes in the bipartite tower windows and matching dormer. Bipartite windows also have four-pane upper sashes. The roof is a grey slate mansard, with an ogee roof featuring concealed flashings and a lead finial on the tower and matching dormer; it is conical at the rear stair tower. Dormers are slated with timber frames and have six-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. Flanking sidelights are present on dormer windows at the northwest (Main Street) pitch, with two-pane upper sashes. Cast-iron downpipes and gutters are present at the eaves, with profiled detailing on the principal elevations. The stacks are roughcast with red sandstone ashlar cornices and red circular cans.
The interior features a timber staircase with turned balusters and good fittings in the first-floor ladies' WC.
