Description
This is a two-storey and attic former bank building, dating from 1885 and designed by Peddie & Kinnear. It occupies a corner site and is constructed in an asymmetrical style, evocative of the 17th century. The building has a square plan, with paired, gabled wings projecting to the rear (northwest). The exterior is built of bull-faced, squared, and snecked sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. A cill course runs along the first floor, and an eaves course is also present.
The southeast (Main Street) elevation is four bays wide, with a chamfered corner at ground floor level on the outer right. This corner contains an entrance door with a blank architraved panel above, and the corner is corbelled to form a square at the first floor. An entrance door is also situated in the bay to the outer left, with an architraved pediment above. Mullioned and transomed windows with pediments are located in the second bay and to the left of the fourth bay. A bipartite window is positioned at first floor level on the outer right.
The northeast (Lorne Street) elevation shows the gable end of the Main Street elevation, with a wing projecting to the right. The ground floor features a chamfered corner to the outer left, along with two closely spaced transomed windows toward the centre of the gable. The first floor has two closely spaced windows to the right, and a single window at second floor level, centring the gablehead.
The northwest (rear) elevation is asymmetrical, displaying lopsided gables flanking the centre two bays. The fenestration is irregular, and a bipartite window is positioned at ground floor level to the right of the centre, with a relieving arch above.
The street elevations feature plate glass timber sash and case windows, with mostly four panes to the rear elevation. Two-leaf timber storm doors, with etched glass inner doors, are present at the corner. The Main Street entrance has a six-panel, two-leaf storm door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above. The roof is covered in grey slate, with three stone dormers situated at the eaves of the Main Street elevation: two flanking the centre and a tall, pedimented dormer with slated roofs and sides. Cast-iron gutters and downpipes with hoppers and decorative brackets are found at the street elevations. Apex stacks made of bull-faced squared and snecked stone, with deep moulded copes and circular cans, top the gable ends of the Main Street elevation. A four-flue stack intersects with the left gable of the rear elevation. A large, rendered stack intersects with the skew of the gable to the left of the Main Street elevation, and crowstepped skews are present elsewhere.
The interior was not inspected in 1995.
Dwarf boundary walls with a concrete cope and modern railing run along Main Street and Lorne Street. Stugged, coursed rubble walls bound the yard to the rear, with a battered profile and saddleback coping. Gatepiers to Lorne Street have bases and plain shafts with chamfered heads.
An ashlar garage with a piend roof and two-leaf vertically-boarded timber doors, plus a six-panel timber pedestrian door to the left, is included on the property.
