Description

The Former Free Church School on Big Kiln Street in Campbeltown dates from around 1845. It is a single-storey, five-bay symmetrical Gothic building with a rhomboidal double-pile plan. The front elevation is made of stugged and squared ashlar, featuring polished ashlar dressings and details. The side and rear elevations are constructed from random rubble with droved margins and projecting cills. The building has a base course, a cornice at the eaves that returns at the ends, raised margins around the pointed-arched windows, and sloping cills facing the street.

On the north elevation, there is a projecting porch at the center, with a base course and steps leading to a pointed-arch doorway that has moulded reveals. The gable facing the street includes a stylised bellcote at the apex, triangular skew copes with block skewputts, and a moulded eaves course on the sides, featuring a round-arched blind lancet on the west side. A new door has been inserted on the east side.

The east and west side elevations have blank double gable ends beneath an M-shaped roof. The south rear elevation is symmetrical with three bays and tall windows, although the lower half of the center window is obscured by a brick addition.

The roof is covered with grey slate, and the porch and M-roof have fish-hook ventilators along the ridges. There are ashlar single flue stacks that are coped and angled to square bases, with decorative octagonal cans on all except the southeast stack. The gables feature gablet skew copes with block skewputts.

The interior has been altered and now includes modern finishes.
