Description
A C Waugh And Co Ltd, located at 43 Union Street in Hamilton, is a building designed in the Scottish Baronial style by Gavin Paterson in 1892 and 1921. It is constructed of snecked stugged rubble with ashlar dressings and sits on a sloping site. The section built in 1892 features five bays facing Union Street, with bipartite windows on the left and a tiled pend that includes a tripartite window set in a segmentally arched crowstep gabled recess. The entrance door is pedimented and flanked by bipartites, with three crowstepped dormer-head windows above, two of which are 2-light windows on the right.
The 1921 section has a wide flat arched entrance, which is now glazed, on the left, featuring a tall central light that rises into a crowstepped gablet between two flanking windows. Above this is a balustraded parapet. The central section has three ground floor windows and four first floor windows, while the right-hand section consists of three windows and has a tall stack on the left that connects to a crowstepped gable on the right, also topped with a balustraded parapet. The left-hand first floor window is bipartite.
The building has a splayed angle with a flat arched architraved doorpiece that rises into a three-light corner bay, which features a wheatsheaf panel at the parapet. Above this bay, there is a low drum topped with a conical roof and a ball finial. Flanking the building on Auchincampbell Road is a two-window gable that roughly mirrors the design on Union Street. Additionally, there is a five-window single-storey range with outer gablets beyond on Auchincampbell Road. The roofs are slated, and the building is capped with corniced ashlar stacks.
