Description

Hamilton Grammar School, located on Auchincampbell Road in Hamilton, was designed by Cullen, Lochhead and Brown, begun in 1910 and opened in 1913 as Hamilton Academy. The building features a classical style with some French neo-classical details and has a quadrangular plan with a symmetrical ashlar frontage that rises three stories.

The main block has a twelve-window main facade, with pavilion-roofed channelled one-window advanced ends. The center features a two-window bay that is channel-pilastered and topped with a segmental pediment containing a swagged clock visible through the ground and first floors. There is a single-storey open porch with square piers that are treated as broad panelled Doric pilasters, and a heavy entablature with a blocking course. The end bays include shallow porches with tall stair windows that are recessed in concave splays, and arched second-floor windows that have corbelled iron balconies. The intermediate bays feature bipartite windows at the ground floor and single lights above, with heavy apron blocks linking the ground and first-floor windows. The second-floor balcony is continuous except where interrupted by the pediment, and architraves are present throughout.

The building has lower three-storey, three-window piended wings with rusticated doorpieces. There is an asymmetrical single-storey, two-window block to the left that includes a ventilator and two corniced stacks. The main block has fourteen-window side elevations, with a door and porch located to the east at the eighth window from the right, and an eleven-window north elevation that features a large tall ashlar stack. The eaves cornice is prominent, and the roof is slated.

In the grounds, there is a single-storey building in a similar style, which has three-window end gables and a six-window center, although it has been much added to. The front features four square corniced ashlar gatepiers and two additional piers on Union Street, accompanied by a low wall and railings.
