Description
The Adult Training Centre on Ednam Street in Annan is a plain classical two-storey academy built in 1820, with contract plans prepared by Thomas Brown and constructed by contractor Hugh Ker, both from Annan. The original building features five bays with shallow advanced end bays and central openings flanked by pilasters. The entrance door is set in a segmental-arched panel. Architectural details include a base course, frieze, and cornice on each floor, along with a blocking course that breaks forward at the center and ends, and raised panels above the center and ends. The windows are multi-paned sash, and there are axial stacks.
Later in the 19th century, full-height two-bay wings were added, matching the original building and maintaining its symmetry. The building is constructed of droved red ashlar with polished dressings and has slate roofs. The recessed wings are identically detailed to the main structure. The property is set behind a low ashlar wall with corniced square gatepiers and cast-iron railings.
