Description

The Council Offices on Argyll Street in Dunoon were designed by Robert A Bryden in 1873. This building is an asymmetrical, two-storey structure with an attic, built in the Scottish Baronial style and shaped in an L-plan. It is situated on a corner site and constructed from grey-green random rubble with cream sandstone ashlar dressings. Notable architectural features include a string course, a stepped corbel course, crowstepped gables, and beak skewputts.

The east elevation facing Argyll Street has a two-storey, three-bay block that is set back from the street, with a taller hall building attached to the right. The lower block features a pointed-arch doorway with two-leaf doors, framed by a basket-arched and moulded surround, located towards the outer right. There is a bipartite window in the center and to the left on the ground floor, while the first floor has single windows to the center and left, along with a bipartite window to the outer right. The taller burgh hall building to the right includes three single windows in the center and outer right, and twin pointed-arch windows to the outer left. The first floor has two tall windows in the center, adorned with cornices and moulded panels above. Above this, a stepped corbel course supports a circular window with cusped tracery set in the crowstepped gable. The left corner features a curved angle that transitions to a square below an angle bartizan.

On the side elevation, there are two bipartite windows to the left of center on the ground floor, two single windows to the right, and four single windows on the first floor. Taller gabled bays are present on the outer right and left. The outer left bay has a single pointed-arch window on the ground floor, two windows on the first floor, and a circular window in the gable above. A doorway is located in the bay on the outer right, with a pointed-arch window above it.

The rear elevation features a gabled bay with a three-light window in the gable and a gabled porch on the outer left, which has a doorway facing west and a two-light window on the return to the left.

The interior was not seen, but it is noted to have a variety of glazing patterns, with timber sash and case windows featuring two-pane glazing, while others have two panes in the lower sashes and a single pane in the upper sashes. The burgh hall has fixed-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has coped ashlar stacks with moulded cans.
