Description

Dunoon Sheriff Court and Justice of the Peace Court, located on George Street in Dunoon, was designed by John McKissack and Son and built between 1899 and 1900, with some later alterations. This two-storey and attic building features an asymmetrical six-bay rectangular plan in a simple Early Renaissance style. The entrance bay is prominent and decorative, with a pediment, an arched doorway, and a tall nine-light first-floor window adorned with stained glass. It also has a stone balustraded shallow balcony supported by consoled brackets. To the far right, there is a lower recessed stair tower. The principal elevations showcase double and triple stone mullioned windows, along with an arched courtroom window on the north elevation. The window dressings and cill and lintel band courses are made of ashlar red sandstone, while the south gable is constructed of whinstone rubble and later render.

The entrance features panelled timber doors, and the windows have been replaced with timber sash and case. The roof is covered with concrete tiles and includes later box dormers.

The interior, as seen in 2014, has a well-executed decorative scheme throughout. The large courtroom on the first floor includes a finely crafted timber bench, timber dado panelling, and a raked seating area beneath a plainly styled timber roof supported by three open timber trusses on stone corbel brackets. The dock area has a floor hatch leading to a staircase. Some alterations have been made to the main entrance reception area. The inner entrance hall features a herringbone floor, an open squared timber stair with timber bannisters, and a decorative cast iron column, all illuminated by a large stained glass window with thistle detailing. The general office areas have predominantly five-panel timber doors. There is also a secondary stair with decorative cast iron bannisters leading to the former caretaker's flat in the attic.

The property is enclosed by low coped boundary walls with railings along the street.
