Description

Clysdale Bank, located at 19-21 Longrow in Campbeltown, is a late 19th-century bank building that incorporates earlier materials. It is a three-storey, three-bay structure with a rectangular plan. The exterior features stugged sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings and details, while the rear and side elevations are made of rubble, squared and stugged at the southeast gable. The building has a base course, a cill course at the second floor, and a corbelled low parapet at the eaves, which is articulated around the segmentally-arched windows on the third floor.

On the northeast elevation facing Longrow, there is a central four-light mullioned window topped with a stepped hoodmould. Flanking this are round-arched doors with moulded, splayed reveals. The door to the left features a stone doorpiece with stop-chamfered corners, while the door to the right has a hoodmould. Both doors are accessed by granolithic steps. The first-floor windows are framed by stepped hoodmoulds that include fruit carvings, and the outer right and left windows have bracketed cills, with the left window being bipartite with a central mullion. Carved star finials adorn the outer left and right windows on the third floor.

The southeast side elevation is blank, while the southwest rear elevation has a three-bay layout with a single-storey roughcast addition at the ground floor left and a round-arched stair window above it. The centre bay on the first floor features a bipartite window.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with plate glass on the principal front and bipartite windows at the rear. Notable features include a 20-pane timber sash and case window with coloured glass in the stairwell and 12-pane windows on the outer right with lying panes. The entrance doors are two-leaf, two-panel timber doors, with a teller machine inserted at the door to the right and a plate glass semicircular fanlight above. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a square section cast-iron downpipe with decorative brackets on the outer left of the street elevation. The rear addition has a piended grey slate roof, and there is a rendered and lined multi-flue stack on the southeast gable, which is coped and features decorative circular cans.

Inside, there is a modern telling room. The property also includes low painted ashlar railings with a stop-chamfered cope along the street, ending to the south with a square, stop-chamfered gatepier topped with a pyramidal cap and ball finial, along with modern railings and gates. Decorative cast-iron openwork gateposts correspond to the entrance doors.
