Description
105 Commercial Street in Lerwick is an 18th-century, two-storey tenement building. The front features a two-bay gable facing the street and a three-bay elevation leading to Heddle’s Court, where it connects to a three-storey tenement at the rear, known as No 105. The shopfront is cement-rendered and lined, with a harled gable above. The west elevation is harl-pointed, while the wall to No 105 is also cement rendered and lined.
The northeast elevation of No 103 has an asymmetrical gable with a painted shopfront that includes a stall riser and a four-pane fixed-light shop window to the left of a cast-iron column. The panelled shop door features vertically-boarded timber reveals and has a two-pane glazed upper section with a plate glass fanlight. There is a single plate glass timber sash and case window on the first floor in the right bay.
On the west elevation facing Heddle’s Court, the ground floor is blank to the left of the centre bay, which contains a cement-render infilled doorway. The right bay has windows on both the ground and first floors that are also infilled, while modern glazing is present in the first-floor bays to the left.
The northeast elevation of No 105 is partially exposed to Heddle’s Court and features a modern entrance door with a wide cement margin. There is a three-pane timber sash and case window with a projecting sill offset to the left on the first floor, and a four-pane fixed-light window in the second floor bay to the left.
Both buildings have different roof coverings: No 103 has a corrugated asbestos roof, while No 105 is covered with diamond tiles. Both roofs feature cast-iron gutters and downpipes. The harled apex stack on No 103 has a cope and moulded circular red cans, while No 105 has a rubble apex stack with a cope and circular cans.
