Description
This building, located at 35, 37, 39 Morningside Road and 33A Churchhill in Edinburgh, dates from around 1900 and is a four-storey, five-bay tenement featuring shops on the ground floor. The front is made of cream sandstone with an ashlar finish, while the rear and sides are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Above the shopfronts, there is a continuous cornice, and the canted windows are supported by ornamental consoles. The third floor has a moulded cill course, and the eaves cornice is adorned with a red fireclay balustrade. The windows are architraved, with stop-chamfered reveals on the canted windows. The first and second floors have single windows with a pulvinated frieze, and the first-floor windows are pedimented while those on the second floor are corniced.
On the west elevation facing Morningside Road, the original shopfronts at Nos 37 and 39 feature recessed tiled doorways, slender timber mullions, and pedestaled pilasters with fluting and floral carvings. The common stair at No 35 has a panelled door, a dentilled cornice, and a rectangular fanlight with border glazing. The centre bay has a tall, cross-sectioned, corniced wallhead stack that breaks the balustrade and connects to the roof, with corbelling at the second and third floors. Each side of the centre bay has single windows on every floor, while the outer bays feature three-storey canted windows.
The north-east elevation is gabled and has two corniced wallhead stacks, with single windows on each floor of the centre bay. The building is fitted with timber sash and case windows that have plate glass glazing. The roof is slate with lead flashings and features three wallhead stacks, along with mutual rendered stacks and a moulded eaves gutter. The interior was not seen in 1992.
