Description
60, 62, 64, 66 Morningside Road is a later 19th-century tenement building designed by Alexander W Macnaughton in 1893. It is a plain three-storey and attic structure with five bays, featuring a single-storey projecting timber shopfront at No 66. The building is constructed from cream sandstone, with stugged ashlar and polished dressings.
The front elevation of the tenement has a chamfered centre bay that connects recessed and advanced bays, with a bank course above the first floor. It includes single and bipartite windows. The left bays feature a three-bay projecting timber shopfront with a dentilled cornice and blocking course, framed by moulded pilasters. There is a recessed doorway at the centre with glazed ingoes and an encaustic tile floor beneath a depressed arch, which has a replacement door and a dentilled pediment. The frieze above the doorway is slightly advanced and has a broken and scrolled pediment that interrupts the cornice. The outer bays have depressed-arched display windows set on panelled stallrisers, with elaborate fluted columnar mullions at the doorway. The display window continues with similar detailing on the return to the right. A modern projecting sign is located at the northern end. The building features timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing and a slate mansard roof with shared stacks.
Inside, there is a decorative plaster cornice and some original fittings, including dentilled and corniced shelving units.
