Description

The Morningside Baptist Church, located at 18 Morningside Road, Churchhill, Edinburgh, comprises a church hall and offices constructed between 1872 and 1874 by MacGibbon & Ross. The building is a rectangular, aisleless gothic church with a southeast tower featuring a stone spire, the church hall and offices extending to the northwest, and modern additions flanking both sides. It is built of cream sandstone, with squared and snecked stugged rubble and ashlar dressings. The design incorporates pointed-arch openings, off-set buttresses, hoodmoulds with label stops to the principal openings, and plate tracery featuring two lancets with an oculus above, accented by ashlar mullions.

The east wall (liturgical west) features a lean-to vestibule, now blocked as a window, a doorway with nook-shafts and a moulded arch, and a projection to the right with a rectangular tripartite window, steep half-piend roof, and a shouldered drum stack. A tall window occupies the gablehead, topped by a rose window with heavy tracery, and an arrowslit window is situated in the finialled gablehead. A pinnacled buttress stands to the right, and the tower is positioned to the left. The west wall showcases two tall bipartite windows separated by buttresses, a rose window centrally placed, and a rectangular louvred window in the gablehead. The south elevation presents a single-storey, flat-roofed modern vestry and three tall nave windows with plate tracery, divided by buttresses. The north elevation includes a tall gabled church hall and offices to the right, alongside a single-storey modern addition with two windows featuring plate tracery and a rectangular bipartite window above.

The two-stage tower rises to a tall ashlar spire. It incorporates set-back buttresses, a battered base course, blind arrowslits in the first stage, and a secondary doorway on the south face. The second stage features recessed tripartite arrowslit windows separated by slender shafts. At the top is an octagonal stone spire framed by slender pinnacles, with a louvred bipartite window set in a finialled gable. Nook-shafts are present on each face at the base of the spire, and four ashlar lucarnes are positioned above.

The church hall and offices, adjoining the north elevation, are characterized by their tall gable and single and bipartite windows. A spandrel with two lancets and an oculus is visible in the gablehead to the east. Lead-pane glazing is used for the nave windows, and the building is roofed with slate and metal flashings. The interior was gutted by fire in 1973 and subsequently rebuilt. The church is set within a low rubble wall to the front, punctuated by octagonal coped gatepiers.
