1, 3, 5 Church Hill Place, Morningside, Edinburgh

The building at 43 Morningside Road in Churchhill, Edinburgh, is a four-storey, seven-bay curved corner tenement constructed in 1898 by JR & EE Pearson. It features shops on the ground floor and is made of cream sandstone with an ashlar front, while the rear is constructed from squared and snecked rubble.

The exterior includes a continuous cornice above the shopfronts, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and a projecting moulded string course above the second floor. The eaves cornice is adorned with a red fireclay balustrade, and the windows have rounded reveals. The first-floor windows are corniced, while the third-floor windows break the eaves. The ground floor features canted windows that are corbelled above on ornamental consoles, with ashlar mullions.

On the southwest elevation facing Morningside Road, there are four bays, including a three-bay curved and chamfered corner. The modern shopfront at No 45 is present, and the outer right bay features a chamfered bay with a three-storey canted window that breaks the eaves, topped with a panelled parapet. This bay is the centerpiece of the tenement, flanked by shallow strip pilasters with ball finials, and features a cornice with a swagged scroll-flanked and pedimented panel above. The curved bay to the right of centre has single windows on each floor, with a semi-circular pediment at the third floor. The curved bay to the left of centre has bipartite windows on each floor, with a shaped pedimented gable at the third floor. The outer left bay contains a three-storey canted window with a half-pyramidal roof.

The south elevation, facing Church Hill Place, has three bays. It includes a door to the common stair at No 1, featuring a panelled door, dentilled cornice, and a rectangular fanlight with border glazing. The original shopfronts at Nos 3 and 5 have recessed doorways and slender timber mullions with ornate floreate capitals. The centre bay has bipartite windows on each floor, with a shaped pedimented gable at the third floor. The bay to the right features a three-storey canted window with a half-pyramidal roof, while the left bay has paired windows on each floor, with a semi-circular pediment on the left and a triangular pediment on the right. The building has timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing, a slate roof with lead flashings, rendered mutual stacks, and moulded eaves gutters and gutter heads.

The interior was not seen in 1992.
