Description

This building, located at 62, 64, 66, and 68 Commissioner Street in Crieff, dates back to 1876 and is a three-storey corner shop and tenement situated on sloping ground. It features a shaped gable at the angled corner and pedimented window heads on the second floor that break the eaves. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced squared and snecked rubble, accented with contrasting raised ashlar dressings. It includes moulded dividing courses, tabbed margins, and stop-chamfered arrises. A continuous frieze and cornice runs over the shops at the ground level on both streets.

On the northern corner elevation, there is a broad door at ground level with a window above on each floor, all set within a full-height ashlar panel. The first-floor window has a moulded cill, and there is an incised panel reading 'COMMERCIAL PLACE' between the floors, along with a datestone in the gablehead that features a small carved shield and stack. The steeply pitched shaped gable extends to the main eaves.

The northeast elevation, facing Commissioner Street, has a part-glazed panelled timber door with a two-part fanlight located to the right of centre at ground level, with a blocked bay beyond it and two fixed display windows to the outer right. To the left, there are two traditional shops flanking a deep-set panelled timber door. The upper floors have regular fenestration across four bays, with the second-floor windows similar to those below.

The northwest elevation, facing King Street, is on steeply falling ground. It features fixed display windows to the left at ground level, with a modern shop to the right. The upper floors display regular fenestration across three bays, with second-floor windows that break the eaves into stone-pediment window heads.

The windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns, although modern glazing has been added to the second floor on the north, northwest, and the bays to the right on the northeast elevation. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with some cans. The building also has moulded bargeboarding and moulded skewputts on the shaped gable.
