Description

The Oban Hotel, located at 15-19 Stafford Street in Oban, was built in 1883. This three-storey building with an attic features a three-bay south elevation and a two-bay return on the east elevation. It is a tenement situated on a corner site, characterized by painted ashlar walls, dressings, and shopfronts. The building has an intermittent base course with stall risers beneath the shop windows. Notable architectural details include a cornice over the shopfronts, a string course at the second-floor cill level, and an eaves cornice. The shopfront openings are adorned with roll mouldings, while the first and second-floor windows have raised margins. The first-floor windows are corniced, with rounded, carved panels at the center of the tripartite windows, and the margins extend down to frame the aprons.

On the south elevation facing Stafford Street, the design is symmetrical, featuring a central tenement door flanked by shopfronts. The outer bays have windows, and there are doors adjacent to the central bay. The shop door on the right has a six-pane glazed upper section with a panel below, while the matching door on the left has had its glazing bars removed. The center of the first and second-floor windows on the south elevation is flanked by tripartite windows.

The east elevation facing George Street includes a shop window in the first bay and a wide entrance in the second bay. A datestone is located in the gablehead, complete with a hoodmould above.

The building features plate glass timber sash and case windows on the first and second floors, along with a panelled two-leaf timber door to the tenement, which has a plate glass fanlight above. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes modern box dormers with bipartite windows. The eaves cornice is terminated on the south elevation by bracketed skewputts, while the east gable has plain skew copes connected by a band course at the base of the stack. The apex stacks have circular cans, and the east stack is corniced. A profiled gutter runs above the eaves cornice.
