Description
This early 19th century public house located at 1 Stafford Street in Oban is a two-storey building with an attic and a rectangular plan, situated on a corner site. The exterior is cement rendered, lined, and painted, with stone margins that are also painted.
On the west elevation facing Corran Esplanade, the building features a symmetrical design with three widely spaced bays and a regular window pattern. There is a pilastered doorway to the left of center, which has remnants of an over doorpiece above it. The ground floor has modern brass cill plates.
The south elevation on Stafford Street also has a symmetrical layout with three bays and a regular window pattern. It includes a pedimented, Doric pilastered stone doorpiece, and a pair of windows is symmetrically placed in the gablehead.
The east rear elevation has a small portion that projects north from an adjoining tenement. There is a stair leading to the first floor, with two doorways leading off it. Additionally, there are two doorways beneath the stair that lead to a game larder. The game larder, located at ground floor level, has a doorway, a pitched grey-slated roof, and a vent at the apex. The building features 15-pane sash and case effect tilting timber windows on the ground and first floors, and 4-pane tilting timber windows in the attic. The roof is covered with grey slates, which extend over the wallhead of the south gable, although the chimney and skew coping have been removed. There are two piend-roofed, slate-hung dormers with 9-pane sash and case effect tilting timber windows on the west pitch, and a single piend-roofed slate-hung dormer with a 12-pane original sash and case window. A cast-iron downpipe is located to the outer left of the west elevation and features a decorative hopper.
