Description

D and J Macewen and Co is a three-storey, four-bay classical tenement building dating from around 1880, located at 58, 60, and 62 High Street in Dunblane. The building has a rectangular plan and features a gabled roof, with shops on the ground floor. It is constructed of yellow ashlar sandstone and includes a cill band at the second floor, an entablature, an eaves course, and a projecting cornice supported by consoles. The first floor has moulded architraves with projecting cornices.

The principal elevation has a panelled timber entrance door to the tenements, which is topped by a large fanlight, located at the centre. To the left, there is a single bay shop front made of plate glass and timber, with a recessed entrance. The outer left side features a pend entrance with two-leaf timber doors. On the right, there is a two-bay shop front also made of plate glass and timber, with a central recessed entrance. The upper storeys have regular fenestration, consisting of two single windows in the centre flanked by stone-mullioned bipartite windows.

The rear elevation was not visible in 2001. The north side elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, while the south side elevation has a harled gablehead, with the remainder also obscured by an adjoining structure.

The windows are timber-framed sash and case, with two panes in the upper section and four panes in the lower section. The roof is covered with grey slates and features lead flashing, along with harled, coped stacks at the gable ends and west wallhead, and coped skews. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors of the ground floor shops have been refurbished, while the tenement was not seen in 2001.
