Description

The Barn with Boundary Wall, located on School Road in Coldingham, dates back to 1738 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a conversion from three separate cottages into a single property in the late 20th century. The building is a two-storey structure, with a single storey and attic at the rear, featuring a seven-bay range and a single storey, two-bay block attached to the outer right. The front is made of whitewashed rubble, with weathered red sandstone dressings and rubble at the rear. Various timber, sandstone, and painted lintels are present on the front, with flush cills throughout.

On the northeast (entrance) elevation, there is a boarded timber door offset to the left of centre, with a lintel inscribed 'RC MY (?) 1738'. To the right, there is a single window in the bay, and a small window in the bay to the left. A two-leaf boarded timber door is located in the penultimate bay to the outer left, with a squat window aligned above it and a large timber lintel. There is a single window at ground level in the outer left bay. Another two-leaf boarded timber door is offset to the right of centre, with a single window in the subsequent bay to the right. The single storey, two-bay block attached to the outer right has a boarded timber door to the left and a garage door to the right.

The southwest (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated at ground level and features catslide dormers. The building predominantly has 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is modern and pantiled, with brick-built ridge and apex stacks and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The boundary walls are heavily pointed and coped rubble walls that partially enclose the site. Pyramidal-capped, square-plan gatepiers flank the pedestrian and vehicular entrances.
