Description

Coldingham Primary School, built in 1893 with later additions and alterations, is a single-storey complex featuring a symmetrical, 11-bay principal range arranged in a 3-1-3-1-3 pattern, along with a substantial flat-roofed addition at the rear. The front is constructed from coursed and bull-faced red sandstone, while the sides are made of squared and snecked tooled red sandstone, and the rear is finished with harl-pointed rubble. The building includes ashlar dressings, some of which are droved. Architectural details include moulded eaves, quoins, and long and short surrounds to the openings. The rear addition is brick-built.

On the south elevation, the central bay features a shaped gable with three large round-arched windows at ground level and a circular window above. There is a round-arched opening in a scroll-bracketed, pedimented bellcote atop the gable, with a wind vane above it and an inscribed panel below. Flanking the central bay are bipartite windows at ground level. The outer left and right sections have kneelered gables that project and contain three large round-arched windows at ground level, with circular windows centered above.

The east side elevation shows the principal block to the left, which has two large bipartite windows that break the eaves in a kneelered gable offset to the left of center, with a small window aligned above. The flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer right.

On the north rear elevation, the principal block features three large round-arched windows in gabled projections to the outer left and right, with the flat-roofed addition at the front.

The west side elevation is a blind elevation for the principal block on the right, with the flat-roofed addition recessed to the left.

The original block has small-pane timber windows, a grey slate roof with sandstone ridging, stone-coped skews with kneelers, and scroll-bracketed skewputts. The interior was not seen in 1999.

The boundary walls and railings consist of coped rubble walls enclosing the site, with plain iron railings. Rendered, square-plan gatepiers flank the entrance and feature pyramidal caps, along with modern gates.
