Description
Courtburn is an 18th-century house with later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-story, three-bay house with a single-story wing set off to the left at the rear, creating a near T-shaped plan. A single-story greenhouse is adjoined to the side. A later two-story wing extends to the right rear, forming a near F-shaped plan, with flanking single-story additions.
The main block is predominantly built of harl-pointed rubble with pink sandstone dressings. A base course is visible, along with narrow quoin strips, long and short surrounds to the openings, painted margins, and flush cills. The later wing is constructed of coursed, lightly bull-faced pink sandstone, featuring crenellated parapets to the flanking single-story additions and projecting cills throughout. A single-story, rectangular ancillary structure, originally a stable/byre, is located to the northwest.
The southwest (entrance) elevation features a part-glazed timber panelled door centrally positioned at ground level, surmounted by a two-pane fanlight with a plain surround and bracketed, dentilled canopy. Single windows flank the door at ground level, and there are single windows in all bays at the first floor. A single-story greenhouse is adjoined to the outer left.
The southeast (side) elevation displays a gable end with a projecting window offset to the right of center at ground level, and a smaller window above. A bipartite window is set within a single-story, two-bay wing recessed to the right, with a lean-to addition to the outer right. Behind this is a two-story wing, featuring a crenellated projection at ground level. A boarded timber door is located to the outer right, and a gabled dormerhead breaks the eaves above a single window, offset to the left.
The northeast (rear) elevation is dominated by a circular window centered at the first floor. Single windows are positioned at both floors to the outer left. A gabled, single-story projection is set off to the left of center, with a single window in a lean-to addition to the front. The projecting two-story wing has a single window centered at ground level. Additional single-story additions are located to the left and right, including a part-glazed timber door and a single window. A square-headed opening adjoins the ancillary structure to the outer right.
The front features timber sash and case windows with four panes of glazing, while those at the rear have twelve panes. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with stone-coped skews. Apex and wallhead stacks are present, topped with various circular and octagonal cans.
The interior of the main house was not inspected in 1999.
The ancillary structure, formerly a stable/byre, is constructed of harl-pointed rubble. The northeast (entrance) elevation has a boarded timber stable door offset to the right, while the southwest (rear) elevation features a single window to the right. It has a pantiled roof and stone-coped skews, and the interior was not inspected in 1999.
Coped rubble boundary walls partially enclose the site, with timber railings in part. Square-plan, panelled timber gatepiers flank the entrance, featuring finialled, corniced caps and two-leaf timber gates.
