Description

St Margaret's Primary School, located on Blackfriars Street in Montrose, is a single-storey, U-shaped school building dating from the later 19th century. It features a central range with four bays, flanked by gable-ended blocks. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a base course, eaves band course, chamfered margins, and battered cills. Stone mullions are present throughout.

The principal (north) elevation is symmetrical, showcasing four bipartite windows in the central block, with tripartite windows in the flanking gable ends. Above the central windows is a circular panel with a quatrefoil and a stylised relieving arch, along with a lancet window in the gablehead. A porch is set back to the right.

The west elevation consists of four bays, featuring a porch on the left and three bipartite windows to the right, with a blank panel to the left of the outer bay. The east elevation also has four bays, with a door to the right that includes a square six-pane fanlight, and three bipartite windows to the left, accompanied by a blank panel to the right of the outer bay.

On the south elevation, the left gable end has a tripartite window and a door. The central block contains two windows to the left, which are partly obscured by a modern flat-roofed addition, and two bipartite windows to the right. The right gable end features a tripartite window and a door, with a window in the return to the left.

The building has 12-pane timber framed windows on the sides and some at the rear, while modern multi-pane windows are present at the front and some at the rear. The pitched roofs are covered with graded grey slates and include two ridge ventilators with square louvred bases and a spire on the central ranges. Stone skews and gablet skewputts are found at the front, with ridge stacks on the east and west sides topped with three polygonal cans.

The boundary walls, gates, gatepiers, and railings consist of low rubble stone walls on the east and west sides, with intact cast-iron railings and gates. There are three square-section gatepiers, each featuring circular panels and quatrefoils on every face. A modern brick wall extends to the west, and a harled wall is present to the south.
