Description

61, 63, 65 Murray Street in Montrose is a former shop and theatre built in the later 19th century, with some later additions. The building is two stories high and has three bays, forming part of an irregular terrace. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the sides are squared and snecked, and the rear is finished in drydash. There is a band course above the ground floor, a cill cornice on the first floor, and an eaves band course.

The west elevation features a mid-20th century shopfront at ground level, with a recessed entrance in the center and large plate glass windows flanked by polished granite panel surrounds. To the right is the theatre entrance, which has a plain rectangular fanlight above two semi-glazed doors. On the first floor, there is a central tripartite window designed in the Serliana style, with cross-shaped openings above and flanking panelled pilasters. The flanking bays have architraved windows topped with corniced and keystoned heads, and there are decorated pilaster wall ends. A clock and a steel name sign are located to the right.

The north elevation is a gable end adjoining 59 Murray Street, while the south elevation is a gable end adjoining 67-71 Murray Street. The east elevation has two blocked openings on the right at ground level, a door to the left, and a small door at the extreme left. There are four windows on the first floor, with a small window at the extreme left.

The windows are timber-framed, featuring a 4-pane glazing pattern and plate glass at the front, while the rear has leaded lights and stained glass. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone skews and skewputts, and there are polychrome brick stacks at the gablehead.

The interior was not seen in 1998.
