Description
St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church is a small, single-story church dating to 1886, built in a Gothic style with an attached T-plan presbytery. The church is rectangular in plan and constructed of stugged sandstone ashlar with contrasting ashlar margins and dressings.
The church's west elevation features a gable end with stepped angle buttresses and a stepped, hoodmoulded tripartite window at the center. The south elevation is symmetrical and has four lancet windows. The north elevation features three lancet windows to the left and a porch to the right, with buttresses, a pointed arch entrance, a fanlight with heavy circular and cusp tracery, and two-leaf panelled doors. The east elevation is a gable end with a projecting piended roof sanctuary, three lancet windows and one window on the north face, with the presbytery adjoining to the left. A stone cross finial tops the east gable. The church has stained glass leaded lights, a steeply pitched and piended grey slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles featuring circle and quatrefoil piercings, and a stone cross finial to the east. A pointed arch bellcote with a cross finial sits on the west side. Stone skews and gablet skewputts are also present.
Inside, the aisleless nave has a recent gallery addition to the west. The slender roof timbers spring from corbels. Niches flank the chancel, with figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Walls are panelled to a low dado.
The presbytery's west elevation has an advanced gable end to the right with a canted bay window at ground level and bipartite windows at the first floor. A two-bay wing is to the left, with a doorway at the center and a bay to the left with bipartite ground floor windows and a dormer-headed bipartite window above. The south elevation has three bays at ground level, a single window in the center, and flanking bipartites. Two dormer-headed windows break the eaves, the one on the extreme right being bipartite. The east elevation has an advanced gable end to the left with a ground-floor window and a wing to the right, which is a single-story, piended brick addition with a door and window. Above, a piended stairtower is located in the re-entrant angle, with a window featuring leaded and stained glass. The north elevation adjoins the church.
The presbytery has timber sash and case windows with plate glass, grey slate pitched roofs with terracotta ridge tiles featuring circle and quatrefoil piercings, and a remaining slate apron of the ridge ventilator. Stone skews and skewputts are present. Ashlar gablehead stacks are located on the north, south, and east sides, with a wallhead stack to the north.
The front boundary is defined by an ashlar wall with stugged coping, and four square section gatepiers with rusticated bases, trefoil gablet capitals, and roll mouldings. The wall extends to the southwest with brick coping and incorporates steel railings and gates. Rear boundary walls (east) are of rubble construction, partly modern.
