Description

The presbytery, built in 1858, is attached to St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Rosetta Road in Peebles. It is a two-story L-plan building constructed of whinstone with cream sandstone ashlar dressings.

The church itself is a plain Gothic-style building with five bays and a single-bay chancel. The church's east elevation, facing Rosetta Road, features a projecting gable for the chancel and a taller gable for the nave. A simple curvilinear four-light window sits within a deeply chamfered pointed-arch frame. Ashlar buttresses flank the elevations, with an ashlar cross at the chancel apex and a wrought-iron cross at the nave apex. The north elevation showcases stepped buttresses between each bay, with a small projecting gabled side chapel to the left. A projecting gabled porch, featuring a pointed-arch hoodmoulded doorcase with labelstops and a blind trefoil, is centrally located. The west elevation is rendered and includes an oculus at ground level, alongside a pair of two-light trefoil-headed windows set above a former gallery level. A square buttressed apex, which once supported a bellcote, is topped with a wrought-iron cross. The south elevation includes three bays of the nave and adjoins the presbytery. The church has leaded windows, grey slates with fish-scale bands, cusped terracotta ridge tiles, a square fleche with a pagoda roof, ashlar coped skews, and corbelled skewputts.

Inside the church, a plain braced open timber roof spans the interior. A panelled gallery is supported by a pair of square chamfered timber columns. Pointed ashlar arch frames define the chancel, where a grey marble altar and reredos are situated. A side chapel exists to the north, and the church contains a limited amount of stained glass.

The presbytery’s east-facing gable has a pair of smaller windows grouped centrally in the gablehead. A two-story link connects the presbytery to the nave, with windows on the first floor, and a single-story link connects to the chancel, featuring a pitched and flat roof. A boarded door and three windows are present, all situated under the eaves. The south elevation has three bays, and the west elevation features a two-bay gable with a lean-to closet and boilerhouse at ground level. A two-bay link to the left incorporates a bipartite window, a glazed door, and a glazed timber veranda connecting the church to the lean-to. The presbytery features timber sash and case windows with three and six panes, grey slates, coped whinstone stacks with ashlar dressings, and ashlar coped skews.

Rubble boundary walls with boulder and saddleback ashlar coping enclose the property, with a wrought-iron gate leading to the presbytery, flanked by coped square rubble gatepiers.
