Description

The Church of St Mary and Presbytery is a Catholic church and presbytery built in 1828, with a mid-19th century apse. It is constructed of stone and has a slate roof. The church features a three-bay nave with an impost band and cornice, and a pedimented west gable. The round-headed windows have keystones and leaded glazing, with rectangular panels above them. The west end includes windows flanking the entrance, which is accessed through a porch supported by paired unfluted Doric columns, and features a frieze and cornice. The gable displays a projecting panel with entwined initials. The rectangular apse has paired round-headed lancets and is attached to the presbytery, which is two storeys high and has three bays. The third bay features a gable and a ground-floor canted bay window with a hipped roof. The central entrance of the presbytery has a shallow gabled porch.

Inside, the church has a segmental vaulted ceiling and a small west gallery above the internal porch, which includes etched glazing. The round chancel arch is supported by paired columns with scrolly capitals. The canted apse contains large paintings, a niche to the right, and an altar to the left. The font, made of alabaster on coloured marble shafts, dates from 1877 and features panels with symbols of the evangelists.
