Description

The Church of St Lewis is a Catholic church built in 1827, noted by Pevsner. It is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof. The building is rectangular with a gable pediment and has three window bays. The entrance includes a pedimented gable portico with Delian Order caps on the columns and pilasters, along with a continuous line of guttae that separates the architrave from the frieze. The doorcase is recessed and features engaged fluted Doric columns, a fluted transom, and a radial bar fanlight above a pair of three-panel doors with raised and fielded panels.

The gable windows are recessed, equipped with stone sills and flat skewback arches. The ground floor windows are built-up, while the upper windows are metal with leaded lights, some of which contain stained glass. The large metal windows on the north and south sides have semicircular heads, leaded lights, and stained glass motifs in their upper sections.

Inside, there is no separate chancel and nave. The apsidal sanctuary is flanked by elaborate fluted Corinthian giant pilasters on pedestals, which form the internal angles of the east end. Between these pilasters are arched recesses with archivolts, with the north recess containing a high-quality marble altar dedicated to "Our Lady." The church also features well-crafted carved hardwood stations of the cross. The flat plastered ceiling has a coved and bracketed cornice and a large ceiling rose decorated with fret and acanthus designs.
