Description
The well in the garden of number 119 is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the early 19th century, although the well itself may be from the 18th century or earlier. It features a yellow sandstone slab cover with a rope winding mechanism. The well is located in the garden of a modern house, but this area was once part of the grounds of a 19th-century farm cottage nearby. The structure includes two vertical side cheeks and an inclined rear slab, which are secured by wrought iron cramps and support a flat cover slab. The side cheeks hold a hardwood roller and a cranked wrought iron handle, and they rest on a thick red sandstone slab that has a rectangular opening. Through this opening, the red bricks of the old circular well are visible.
