Description

Christ Church is a parish church built in 1833 by Blore. It features red sandstone construction with a slate roof and consists of a five-bay nave, a short chancel, and a southwest steeple. The square tower has angle buttresses, a gothic entrance on the east side, and lancet windows on the south and west faces. At the bell stage, there are twin louvred lancets on all sides. The steeple rises from below the nave ridge level into a hexagonal drum, which has louvred lucarnes facing north, south, east, and west, along with four smaller lucarnes in the spire that overhangs the drum. The windows throughout the church are lancet-shaped with leaded lights, including a large set of three in the chancel and single windows in the nave and chancel side walls. The exterior also features a projecting plinth, a moulded string course at sill level, gable copings, and a stone ridge.

Inside, the small chancel is fronted by carved oak choir stalls, with the organ on the south side and the oak pulpit on the north side. A simple carved oak screen fronts the choir gallery at the west end of the nave. There is a single marble war memorial plaque mounted on the wall of the nave. The roof is supported by cross-braced queen post trusses, with raking ceilings that meet a level ceiling at the collar.

Christ Church was built as a Commissioner's church at a very modest cost.
