Description

The Church of St Peter is a Catholic church built in 1831. It is constructed of brick with a rendered plinth and quoins, and has a slate roof. The building is rectangular, comprising four bays in a lancet style, with a presbytery situated behind the chancel at the south end. The north gable features a pair of four-panel doors set within a gothic opening with a timber panelled transome. This entrance is flanked by cast iron lattice windows in lancet openings with stone sills, and a single bell is housed in an opening above the door. The building has two-way projecting quoin pilasters, moulded eaves cornices and pyramid finials, with lead-covered gable coping. The nave walls contain lattice windows in lancet openings; those close to the chancel feature stained glass. Projecting coved eaves cornices have a lead gutter.

Inside, the sanctuary is apsidal and set into the wall shared with the presbytery. A marble altar with a reredos and dado, terrazzo flooring, and a painted ceiling is present. The main altar is flanked to the west by a marble "Lady" altar and to the east by a vestry door, both with mosaic memorial pictures positioned above them. The entire wall is clad in marble up to the coved ceiling cornice. The side walls have a brown marble dado with white marble to the window arches. Mosaic stations of the cross are displayed alongside mosaic memorial pictures (dating from 1875 to 1912) placed between the windows. A grained timber choir gallery and screen are located at the north end of the nave, which is capped with a flat ceiling and cove.
