Description

This milestone, likely dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, is made of whitewashed stone and features a triangular shape with a flat top and straight back. The lettering on the milestone indicates distances: 'TO WARRINGTON 3 MILES' on the left and 'TO MANCHESTER 16 MILES' on the right. It is marked on the 1848/9 Ordnance Survey map and was probably erected along a former 18th-century turnpike road, which is now the A57. The milestone is an important physical marker that reflects the area's evolving transport history.
