Description

This milestone, likely from the mid-19th century or earlier, is made of whitewashed stone. It has a round front, a straight back, and a half-dome top. The lettering on the milestone indicates the distance to Warrington as 2 miles on the left side and to Wigan as 10 miles on the right side. The word "MILES" is mostly obscured on the left face due to the raised ground level. This milestone was probably erected along a former 18th-century turnpike road and serves as an important marker of the area's transport history.
