Description
Birchley Hall is a house that now serves as the Sue Ryder Memorial Home. It was built in 1594 for James Anderton, with a south wing added in 1618 for either James or Christopher Anderton. The building is constructed of stone and has a stone slate roof. It stands three storeys high and features five bays, all topped with gables. The second and fourth bays project slightly, while the end bays project even further. The gables are coped with kneelers. Most of the windows have ovolo mullions and label moulds, consisting of three and four lights. The end bay windows and the ground floor window of the central bay have been replaced with 18th-century sashed windows that include glazing bars. The entrance to the fourth bay features a Tudor head, and there is a blocked entrance to the first floor of the second bay with an inserted window. The south chapel wing displays varied fenestration, with some ground floor windows featuring hollow-chamfered mullions. An external stair on brick arches leads to a second-floor entrance in the first bay.
Inside, there are remains of a priest's hole and a secret cupboard, while the first-floor stair has turned balusters. Some door heads are Tudor arched, and there is an 18th-century fireplace in one of the first-floor rooms. Notably, a secret printing press operated in the house around 1647, marking it as the first post-Reformation Catholic press in England.
