Description

10, 12, 14 John Street in Montrose is a mid-19th century, two-storey and attic, three-bay tenement that forms part of an irregular terrace. The building is constructed from stugged sandstone ashlar and features a base course, a band course above the ground floor, and chamfered margins.

On the northern (principal) elevation, there are three small doorways, with the central doorway featuring consoles and a cornice, though it is now boarded up. The flanking doors are panelled and all are deep-set. Above the central doorway, there is a window at the first floor, with symmetrical flanking bays that have windows at both the ground and first floors. The ground floor windows have former cellar lights that are now blocked below the cills. The roof features a central gabled dormer with a finial, and canted dormers on either side, all of which are slate-hung.

The eastern elevation adjoins 16 John Street, while the western elevation adjoins the former United Presbyterian Church.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows at the ground floor and in the canted dormers, and 4-pane windows at the first floor and in the gabled dormer. The roof is pitched with grey slate, featuring skew and skewputt to the east. There is a broad and tall brick stack on the eastern side, and cast-iron cornice guttering on the northern elevation.
