Description

St John's United Free Church and Hall are located at 59 John Street, Montrose. The church was designed by William Smith and built in 1829, while the hall dates from 1892. The church is a 2-storey, rectangular building in a Neo-classical style, prominently featuring a Tetrastyle Ionic portico. The front facade is constructed from fine grey sandstone ashlar, with brown sandstone used on the sides, and a squared and snecked finish to the rear. It includes a base course, a cill course on the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a parapet.

The south (principal) elevation is symmetrical, composed of five bays. Four Ionic columns support a deep entablature and pediment. Pilasters flank three architraved doorways at ground level, each featuring a rectangular fanlight, 14-pane glazing, and a pair of 6-panel doors. Three windows are centred above at the first floor level. Single bays flank the portico, each containing a window at both ground and first floor levels. A bellcote sits above and behind the pediment, featuring four round-arched, louvred openings on each face, paired attached columns on splayed corners, a cornice, and a copper-clad cupola with a weathervane.

The east and west elevations are identical, each featuring five bays with tall, round-arched windows, incorporating dividing round-arch tracery and a circular feature at the head of the central three bays; the outer bays are blocked. The north elevation has a three-bay end, also featuring round-arch windows with dividing tracery, the central window being taller. A doorway is positioned beneath the cill of the window to the left, and the hall adjoins the church to the right.

Timber sash and case windows are present throughout, with 16 panes beneath the portico and 24 panes in the outer bays. Multi-pane glazing is used in the round-arch windows. The roof is covered with grey slate.

The interior has been converted into offices across two floors, and along the gallery level. The central space of the church has been altered with the addition of rooms which now interrupt the gallery. Stained glass remains in the round-arch windows, and marble columns rise through the gallery.

The hall is a single-storey, rectangular building with a porch and a small piended section abutting the north end of the church. The eastern elevation features ashlar construction and a round-arched window with two pilaster mullions bisected by a cornice, creating a Diocletian window. The gablehead rises to a cornice and pediment, incorporating a circular panel in the tympanum. A porch on the left has one window facing east and a door and window in the return. On the north elevation are four bays of squared and snecked stonework. The west elevation is a gable end with a recent addition adjoining. The hall also features timber sash and case windows and a grey slate pitched roof with a tall wallhead stack rising from the eaves to the south.

Boundary walls constructed from squared and snecked stone, along with five square gate piers capped with wrought-iron railings, are located to the east of the church and hall, along Mill Street.
