Description

24 John Street in Montrose is a mid-19th century, two-storey house with an attic and three bays. The front is made of stugged sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from squared and snecked stone. There is a band course above the first floor.

On the north elevation, the central feature is a blocked round-arched window with pilasters, set in deeply raised margins and topped with a corniced head. Flanking this are large windows at the ground floor, also in raised and chamfered margins with corniced heads. Above, there are three smaller windows centered and framed with moulded architraves.

The south elevation has a single bay projection in the center with a door at the ground floor and a window above. To the right, there is a bay with one window at the first floor, and to the left, there are two windows at the ground floor and one at the first floor. There are two piended dormers on the left and right, along with one later dormer in the center.

The west elevation features two doors at the ground floor and one blocked window to the left, with one window to the left at the first floor. The east elevation has two windows at the ground floor and one window to the right at the first floor.

The house has 4, 6, and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with modern windows in the dormers. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slate, featuring ashlar gablehead stacks topped with polygonal cans. A profiled and moulded cast-iron gutter runs along the front.

The boundary walls include a coped ashlar wall on John Street to the west with carriage gates, a rubble stone wall to the south, and a coped brick wall dividing the garden to the west. There is a low coped ashlar wall in front of the house to the north with cast-iron railings and a framed entrance to the right. To the east, there is a coped wall with an entrance to the left, featuring a segmental pediment inscribed "CURA CURARUM CURA ANIMARUM" and a wrought-iron gate.
