Description

The Parish Council Chambers, located at 51 John Street in Montrose, was built in 1849 and reconstructed in 1915. This single-storey civic building has a rectangular plan and features a prominent classical entrance. The front is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of squared and snecked stone. It has a cornice and a wallhead parapet.

The south elevation, which is the main entrance front, is symmetrical. It has an advanced tripartite centerpiece that includes a round-arch doorway with cavetto moulding reveals, channelled rustication, and a keystone. Above the doorway is a large fanlight with radiating glazing bars and twin leaf panelled doors. Above the cornice, there is a raised wallhead featuring a carved wreath, shield, and swags, inscribed with "1915" and "PARISH COUNCIL CHAMBERS." Flanking piers extend through the cornice, and there are bays on either side of a blank wall, with a window on the east and west facing returns. The single bays on either side are set back.

On the west elevation, there is a door to the right and two windows to the left. The east elevation features a door to the left and three windows to the right. The north elevation has a triple gable end, with a round-arch window that is blocked, a window to the far left that is also blocked, and one window in the center, along with a brick addition to the right.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows on the front and plate glass and 4-pane windows at the rear. The roofs are triple pitched.

Inside, there have been modern conversions. The entrance is flanked by square-section gatepiers that are capped and feature a four-legged metal lampholder on each cap.
