Description
1 Chapel Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century classical house with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring a square plan. The front and one side are finished in sandstone ashlar, while the other sides are constructed from rubble stone. The building has a base course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
On the south elevation, there are two windows in the basement to the right. A six-step flight with a steel balustrade leads to the entrance on the raised ground floor, which features a pilastered and corniced doorpiece with a recessed four-panel door and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Above this, at the first floor, is a centrally located window, with two symmetrical bays to the right that have architraved margins and corniced heads. There is a canted dormer set back to the right.
The west elevation has a boarded doorway in the center, with a blinded window immediately above it. There is another window at the first floor, with blinded windows flanking the ground floor and two openings in the basement to the right. A canted dormer is also set back on this side.
The east elevation is a blank gable end with blocked openings. The north elevation is adjoined by a neighboring property on the right. The house features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof that is piended to the west and pitched to the east, and the stacks have been removed.
There is a low coped boundary wall in front of the basement to the south.
