Description
10 West Road in Irvine is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey house with a basement and attic, featuring a classical design. The front is made of painted, coursed, stugged sandstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble stone. It has an eaves band, cornice, blocking course, and quoin strips with ashlar margins.
On the southwest elevation, there is a bay to the left with a nine-step stone staircase that has ornamental cast-iron railings. This leads to a consoled, corniced doorpiece at the principal floor, which includes two-leaf doors and a rectangular fanlight window above. There is a piended dormer above this, and a basement window to the left of the stairs. To the right, there are steps descending to a door and window in the basement, a window at the principal floor with a corniced head, and another window at the first floor, along with a piended dormer above.
The northwest elevation features a gable end that is harled, while the southeast elevation also has a gable end. The northeast elevation consists of three bays with a projecting bowed stairtower in the center.
The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, and the roof has been replaced with tiles. The southeast elevation has a rubble stone gablehead stack, while the northwest elevation has a brick stack.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by rubble stone boundary walls to the north and south, with a low coped wall to the west.
