Description

60 Bank Street in Irvine is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey house with a basement and attic, featuring a classical design. The front is made of ashlar stone with vermiculated rustication on the basement, channelled stone on the ground floor, a cill band course on the first floor, a deep eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The ends have channelled pilasters, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble stone.

The northwest elevation is symmetrical, with a six-step stone flight leading up to a central doorway framed by pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. Flanking this are bays with windows that have raised margins, with a cornice and pediment above. The first-floor windows are smaller and have simple moulded margins, while the basement windows lack margins. Above, there are piended and canted dormers. To the left, there is a single bay addition with a rusticated ashlar front that matches the existing structure.

The northeast elevation features a gable end with an advanced single-storey addition that is partly rendered, with a bipartite window to the left. The southwest elevation has a gable end with windows on the ground and first floors to the left. The southeast elevation includes a central bow-fronted stair tower with a basement window, a tall window at the ground and first floors, and a small window at the attic level. The bays flanking this have windows at the basement, ground, and first floors with plain margins. There is a later brick addition from the basement to the first floor in the re-entrant angle to the right, and a doorway at the ground floor in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a basement entrance below.

The windows are timber sash and case, with four panes at the front and modern plate glass at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone skews, broad ashlar gablehead stacks, and a piended lean-to roof on the addition to the north.

Inside, the principal rooms on the ground floor have deep cornices and coving, along with decorative rosettes and floreate scrolls. There is a cast-iron banister on the rear staircase. A later low brick wall with decorative railings is present at the front of the property.
