Description

57 Bank Street in Irvine is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a two-storey structure with a three-bay rectangular plan. The front is finished in painted ashlar, while the sides and rear are made of rubble stone. The building features a base course, a band course above the ground floor windows, a cill band course on the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, with architraved margins.

On the southeast, or principal elevation, there is a central doorpiece with a console and cornice, decorated with scroll, shell, and leaf motifs. The door is panelled and has a narrow rectangular fanlight in a plain surround. A window is located on the first floor, while to the right, there are matching windows on both the ground and first floors. To the left, there is a full-height bow window with three lights on both the ground and first floors, which breaks the eaves and is supported by decorative cast-iron brackets. An addition to the right has a round arch moulded doorpiece (which is blocked), along with a cornice and wallhead above.

The northeast elevation features a blank gable end, with an advanced brick addition at the ground floor that has both flat and pitched roofs. The southwest elevation is also a blank gable end. The northwest elevation includes a harled piended addition at the centre of the ground floor, with windows on each side. Above, there is a tall round-arched stair window on the first floor, flanked by bays with plain windows on both the ground and first floors, where the margins vary. A piended dormer is located above.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 10 panes at the rear and plate glass at the front, along with stained glass in the round arch window at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone skews and a conical roof on the bow at the front. The house has ashlar gablehead stacks with five cans and an additional wallhead stack at the rear.
