Description
St Mary's Church Hall is an early 19th century single-storey building with a basement and attic, designed in a rectangular classical style. It features three bays and has sandstone ashlar on the front, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble stone. The building includes an eaves band, cornice, and blocking course, with ashlar margins and panelled pilaster quoins. Notable prominent dormers are present on both the front and rear.
On the west elevation, there is a central entrance door located on a raised principal floor, flanked by bays with basement windows. The ground floor has large windows, and the front features bowed dormers with tripartite windows, decorated mullions, and a cornice above. A later flat-roofed extension with concrete steps and an entrance has been added, which insensitively obscures the centre of the elevation.
The south elevation displays a gable end with a single window at both the basement and ground floor levels. The east elevation has a central entrance door, which was originally a window, situated between floors and another former window. Above this is a broad, shallow swept later dormer with tripartite windows acting as fanlights. The bays on this side also have basement windows and ground floor windows, with piended dormers above featuring tripartite windows, decorated mullions, and a cornice.
There is a later addition offset to the right of centre that serves as an entrance vestibule; this section is harled with raised margins and has a combined pitch roof with both gable and flat sections. Additionally, there is a lean-to addition to the left of centre, which is also harled and includes a window.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The building features timber 12 and multi-pane sash and case windows, dark grey slate roofing, and ashlar gablehead stacks.
