Relief Church, West Road, Irvine

The Relief Church on West Road in Irvine was built in 1773 and enlarged around 1800. It is a classical church with a rectangular plan featuring a prominent front section that has a pediment and pilasters, flanked by side porches. The walls of the nave are made of brown rubble stone, while the front is finished in grey-green, squared and snecked stone, with ashlar dressings and a base course. The front also has an entablature and a pediment.

On the east elevation, there is a central tripartite window with paired pilasters on either side that support a simple pediment. The entablature continues around the sides, where corner pilasters are located. The side porches are pilastered, with an entrance door on the right porch and a window on the left porch, both topped with a frieze and cornice.

The south elevation features a four-bay nave with tall round-arched windows. An advanced porch on the right has pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, while an aedicule is blocked in. A pilaster is set back in the re-entrant angle above the porch, and one window is also blocked in. The entablature above continues from the east facade.

The north elevation is symmetrical to the south elevation, but it has a window in the porch.

The west elevation has recent extensions that are not included in the listing. The interior was not seen in 1996. The windows are blocked and boarded, and the roofs are piended and covered in grey slate.
