Description
The Methodist Church on Bell Street in Airdrie was built in 1841. It is a plain, gabled Gothic church with a rectangular plan and three bays. The exterior features full-height, pinnacled, engaged columns that frame the central entrance bay. The church is constructed from plastered, squared sandstone rubble and has a base course. It includes tall stone-mullioned and transomed bipartite windows with traceried pointed arches. The gable ends have gablet-coped skews and corbelled skewputts.
On the southwest elevation, which is the principal facade, there are three bays with stopped hoodmoulds above the openings. The central entrance door is flanked by tall windows, and there is a window in the gablehead above the door. A continuous cill course runs along the base of the windows, and a date stone is set into the apex of the gable. The engaged cluster columns on either side terminate in pinnacles that break the eaves, and there is a blocked parapet between these pinnacles. A short column at the apex of the gable supports a stone cross finial. The tall flanking windows enhance the overall verticality of the design.
The northeast elevation features paired windows and an urn finial at the apex of the gable. The southeast side elevation has three bays with regular fenestration, while the northwest side elevation mirrors the southeast but has a blocked door in the outer right bay.
The church has diamond-pane leaded glass windows and is roofed with grey slates and lead flashing. Inside, the church is a whitewashed plain gabled box.
