Description
Airdrie Savings Bank, located on Stirling Street in Airdrie, was designed by J M Arthur in 1924. This two-storey, 15-bay building has an L-shaped plan and features a classical architectural style. The exterior is characterized by giant order, engaged polished granite columns that support an advanced block and baluster balcony on the second storey. The building is constructed of cream ashlar sandstone, with a channelled ground floor and a grey granite base course. There is a dividing band between the first and second storeys, a projecting cornice, and a parapet.
The principal elevation faces southeast and is a symmetrical six-bay corner block. The central entrance bay is flanked by cast-iron torcheres and features a granite hoodmould above modern steel doors. Roman bound reed bundles support a sandstone cornice over the entrance, and there is a bronze sculpture group within a niche above. The first and second storeys are separated by a blind balcony baluster, and the upper storey has a recessed, blind design that terminates in a stepped parapet with an inscribed panel stating "ASB INSTITUTED 1835." The ground floor has advanced plinths that support engaged giant order Tuscan columns in the flanking bays, and the entablature leads to a block and baluster parapet of the first-floor balcony, with swept buttresses between the bays.
The east side elevation has four bays with regular fenestration, while the south side elevation also has four bays with regular upper storey windows and a parapet that terminates in a block on the outer left. The ground floor features a modern shop front and is obscured by an adjoining building to the southwest. The northwest rear courtyard elevation is harled with irregular fenestration.
The building has fixed multi-pane windows and a low hipped roof covered with grey slates and lead flashing. Inside, the bank retains original 1920s timber panelling, counters, and ornate plasterwork ceilings.
Additionally, the bank is complemented by tall, square-plan gatepiers that feature a base, a column bearing relieving panels, a projecting cornice, an architrave, and flat capstones. The geometrically patterned cast-iron gates connect the bank to the Airdrie Public Library, which has a separate listing.
