Description

The Airdrie Arts Centre, located on Anderson Street in Airdrie, is a former library designed by George Arthur and completed in 1893. This two-storey, five-bay building features a rectangular plan and a classical style with a prominent pedimented facade. The front is constructed from red sandstone ashlar, which is channelled at the ground floor, while the sides and rear are made of bull-faced yellow sandstone courses. Key architectural elements include a base course, a projecting moulded dividing band between the floors, and a full entablature that ends in a projecting cornice and blocking course. The ground floor has semicircular-arched windows, while the upper floor features tall rectangular windows with cavetto moulded architraves.

On the principal (north) elevation, stone steps lead to a central doorway flanked by engaged columns that support a segmental pediment, with a tympanum dated 1893. The fenestration is regular in the flanking bays, and the engaged columns support a large pediment that breaks the eaves over the three central bays, which displays the Airdrie coat-of-arms in the tympanum. The outer bays have single windows.

The rear (south) elevation is obscured by later additions. The east side elevation includes a two-storey, half-gabled addition with harled and red ashlar cladding on the right return, featuring a window on the ground floor and an oculus above. The west side elevation has a blind, single-storey, flat-roofed addition with channelled ashlar on the left return and a recessed blind arcade.

The building features fixed multi-pane windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
