Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, located at 10 Bank Street in Airdrie, is a classical bank building designed by James Thomson in 1874. It is a three-storey, five-bay structure with a rectangular plan. The front façade features a broken semicircular-arched pediment that displays the royal coat of arms above the central window on the second storey. The building is constructed of yellow ashlar sandstone at the front, with squared and snecked rubble on the sides and rear. Notable architectural details include a stepped base course, a dividing band between the first and second storeys, a continuous cill course on the second storey, an eaves course cornice, and a blocked parapet. The windows have lugged architraves with projecting cornices, and the first-floor windows are consoled.

On the principal (west) elevation, the outer bays are slightly advanced. The ground floor has modern cladding and openings. The first floor features a semicircular-arched pediment above the central window, with carved, projecting pediments above the windows in the outer bays. The second storey has a slightly smaller window. A heavy projecting cornice, adorned with mutules and paterae, leads to the cymatium, while the blocked parapet includes paterae and recessed panels.

The rear (east) elevation has a modern, flat-roofed extension at ground level. The upper storeys display irregular fenestration, with a tall semicircular-arched window on the centre right and a steel fire escape on the far right. Both the north and south side elevations also exhibit irregular fenestration.

The building features plate glass, sash windows, and a concealed low-pitched hipped roof covered with grey slates and lead flashing. The interior was not seen in 2001.
