Description

5 Graham Street in Airdrie is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay classical bank building with a rectangular plan and a symmetrical tripartite design. The building features a projecting pediment at the center and is constructed of painted ashlar. It has a base course and giant pilasters that support a Tuscan entablature, with shouldered architraves around the windows.

On the south (principal) elevation, the entrance bay is slightly advanced and features pilasters and a pediment. There are stone steps leading to the doorway, which has a doorpiece with square-section engaged columns supporting a balustraded entablature. The outer bays have tall, tripartite stone-mullioned windows, while the upper storey has regular fenestration.

The north (rear) elevation includes a two-storey, three-bay gabled addition at the center, with irregular fenestration on the returns and a single-storey slated lean-to at the gable end. The right bay has a single window on the upper storey, while the left bay has a door on the ground floor and a window on the upper storey.

The east (side) elevation is a blank gable end, while the west (side) elevation features an advanced, full-height bowed bay at the center, which has windows on both the ground and first floors facing north.

The building has plate glass timber frame sash and case windows, grey slate roofing with lead flashing, and coped skews and gable stacks. The interior has modern bank fittings on the ground floor, while the upper floor was not seen in 2001.

Flanking the principal elevation are symmetrical single-storey walls, which include an eaves course with blocking and segmental carriage arches at the center with projecting margins. An arch to the east is blocked and has a slated lean-to at the rear.
