Description

2, 4, 6, 8, 8A Bank Street in Airdrie is a classical corner block building designed by William Baird and George Arthur in 1878, with later alterations. It is a 2-storey and mezzanine structure with a long, rectangular plan and nine bays, situated on sloping ground with shops on the ground floor and offices above. The building features a pedimented plinth that displays the Airdrie coat-of-arms on the corner parapet. The principal elevations are finished in yellow sandstone channelled ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble.

The west elevation is nine bays wide, with bowed outer bays. The ground floor has modern shop fronts, and there is a mezzanine to the south. The first floor showcases Tuscan pilasters flanking semicircular-arched windows, which feature projecting keystones and a full entablature that supports a balustraded parapet. The parapet ends in a tripartite corner block on the outer right, which has a carved and painted Airdrie coat-of-arms at the center, flanked by lower segmental pediments.

The east elevation has bays on the left that are obscured by an adjoining building, while the right side has a single-storey, flat-roofed brick extension. The south elevation, facing Graham Street, features a mezzanine above the ground floor and is a smaller version of the west elevation, with a balustrade and a segmentally-arched pediment on the outer right.

The north elevation has irregular fenestration and a coped wallhead stack at the center. The upper storey has plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the ground floor has plate glass shop fronts. The building has a concealed low hipped roof covered with grey slates and lead flashing.

Inside, the ground floor has modern shop fittings, while the upper storey contains offices with some retained plasterwork.
