Description

The Post Office at 14 Anderson Street in Airdrie is a classical office block built in 1905 by W M Robertson. This two-storey, five-bay building has a rectangular plan and a symmetrical design, featuring a curved corner bay that is balustraded between outer pediments, with a bow to the west. It is constructed from red ashlar sandstone and includes a base course, eaves course, and a mutulated cornice. The openings have chamfered margins and moulded projecting cills.

The principal elevation faces south and consists of five bays. The three central bays at the ground floor have semicircular-arched windows with projecting keystones, while the upper floor features square-headed windows with consoled cills. The outer bays are symmetrical and slightly advanced, each topped with consoled segmental arch pediments that break the eaves, leading to coped parapets. There is a consoled canopy over the entrance in the outer left bay, which has a two-leaf timber panelled door, and a window in the outer right bay. A balustrade runs over the central bays. The left return features a bowed corner bay with a stone mullioned bipartite stair window in the centre.

The rear elevation to the north was not visible in 2001, while the east side elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, and the west side elevation is blind. The building predominantly has 12-pane sash and case windows, with a 9-pane grid pattern below the arch-heads of the principal windows. The roof is low and double-pitched, covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and there are coped stacks on the sides. The interior was not seen in 2001.
